There are some teachings in the Bible that we probably hear so often, that we become deaf to the very message contained therein. As a Jewish believer, Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (which was called the SHEMA-based on the first word of the verse) was something that you heard, memorized, and could recite from the earliest age onto adulthood.
When Jesus was confronted by a teacher of the law, or lawyer, and asked what was the one greatest commandement, Jesus answered by quoting the SHEMA, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength," and adding from Leviticus 19, and "love your neighbor as yourself."
